Pneumatic actuator kit is not difficult to make in the home workshop. They can be made in a range of sizes for distinctive household tasks. Homemade equipment should never be linked to condensed air tanks, or motorized condensed air mechanisms, particularly plastic. Air under pressure has explosive properties when all of a sudden released from its containment and can rapidly turn sections of untested pneumatic actuators into dangerous projectiles. Use a tire pump or foot pump to stably start the homemade actuator.
A Task for Each Size
We can produce air cylinders of about an inch or tinier in diameter up to four inches, white PVC pipe effective in the plumbing department at hardware stores and home center chains. The smaller cylinders of pneumatic actuator kit are handy for unfolding or latching doors and windows. The larger cylinders of pneumatic electric actuators kit can be applied as rapid clamp actuators or even to squash cans. The nice section about using PVC pipe is that it comes in 10-foot lengths, so fair long cylinders can be built without a lot of fuss.
Choose a length of PVC pipe and an end cap to suit it. Then seek an end cap and two straight couplings with an outer diameter just mildly smaller than the inside of the first piece of pipe. Find the pipe size consistent with the smaller end cap and straight couplings and buy it too. Neoprene O-rings should be ones with an outer diameter near to the inner diameter of the larger pipe and an inner diameter equal to the outer diameter of the smaller pneumatic actuator pipe. Buy a bottle of PVC pipe cement, some plastic tube and 3/8-inch threaded tube fittings parts.
Remove any burrs from the tinier parts. Install the tube part in the larger end cap and cement the cap onto the end of the larger pipe, which has been cut to the needed length. For the piston, the thought is to utilize the tinier end cap and one of the couplings to form a fixing slot for the O-ring. Consolidate these onto a short piece of the smaller pipe so that the gap between them just retains the thickness of the O-ring. Strengthen a longer part of the smaller pipe of pneumatic actuator kit into the other side of the coupling to contain the piston rod. After the strengthening is totally dry, slide the O-ring into its slot and spread petroleum jelly liberally over the whole end of the piston. Slip the piston into the cylinder of the pneumatic actuator kit and inspect for a good seal and smooth motion in the stroke.
Ready to Go
Joint the tube to the cylinder and to a bicycle or camping-style foot pump. Size the cylinder in order that it needs a minimum of linkage or brackets to install in your application. It may be important to make pivots for one or both ends of the homemade pneumatic actuator kit. Use a small shut-off valve to sustain the cylinder in a position.
