Basic Elements of Pneumatic Actuators

Pneumatic actuator is a kind of machine that can change the type of energy such as pressurized gas, air etc into mechanical energy that can provide power to various types of machinery. For example, compressed gases are moved into a place where a piston or shafts are applied to turn on the motion. There are several types of electric actuators that are used nowadays such as pneumatic cylinder that has single or double acting cylinder, rotary actuators, and diaphragm actuators.

Pneumatic actuators have basic elements. They are piston; cylinder, valves or ports and each of them have their own advantages. For instance, there is a seal or diaphragm covering the piston and in this way, the air in the upper parts of the cylinder can be kept effectively. What’s more, air pressure is allowed to make the seal move downward and also the piston below. Valve stem is forced to move and is connected with the actuator inside. Some pneumatic actuators have one spot for a signal input which is depended on the action. Valve needs very little compel force to operate. But double even triple input forces are also common. Here one thing you should notice, different size of the piston have various output pressure. For example, if you need larger pressure, you should choose a piston of bigger size. A larger piston is helpful especially when the air supply is low because it can allow less input. No matter a big or small size of piston you would like to use, it is power enough to crush things inside the pipe.

The valve stem can transfer pressure too. Valve plug or butterfly valve is connected with it. In higher pressure environment, larger forces are demanded and same as it, a higher flow pipeline is required to withstand large forces.

Cylinders are other basic elements that are consisted in the pneumatic actuator and there are also different types of cylinder. The first type is linear cylinder. This type can offer straight line, in or our linear movement. Many different types of pneumatic actuators use this kind of cylinder as basic element because single and double acting can be selected to use. Another type is compact cylinder. It has similar function as basic cylinder such as single and double acting, rod. One difference it has is that it is occupying very little space and therefore save lots of space amount.

Valves are used with diaphragm or piston. Low, middle and high pressure valves are designed to work with pneumatic actuators. An efficient and economical pneumatic valve is highly useful in the process of energy transformation and different air pressure is also available as well. The input pressure of the valve is a signal. And the transmitter can monitor the pressure. When the pressure rises, higher pressure is directed to the valve.

These are some basic elements of the pneumatic actuators; each of them owns their special values and plays an indispensable role in the energy transforming process. Choosing the right type of elements can help to increase the working efficiency.
